If your technician is distracted and answers their mobile phone during a treatment session, this is completely unacceptable. Do you know that even something as simple as taking a phone call or replying to a text message can put you at risk of infection? A microscopic bacteria could be transferred from the phone keypad to your skin, then you could be at risk. What if your practitioner decides to take a break and eat or drink something. Again this is totally unacceptable and puts your health at risk.

CLEANLINESS STRATEGIES

Look at pictures on the internet of the studio where you will have your procedure done. Look for clues about hygiene and cleanliness revealed in the work space.

Are all the surfaces in the workspace designed to be impervious and resistant to liquid spills and stains? Is there a suitable operating bench, or adjustable recliner chair with a washable surface, that is disinfected and clean. Are all client contact surfaces cleaned and wiped with an effective disinfecting sprays and wiped between client procedures to reduce the risk of cross infection? Can you see a paper roller towel system used to cover bench, or recliner chair between clients? The floors should be hard surfaces and easy to clean. There should be no carpets in the treatment areas.

Some questions to ask?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask, "How are the countertop, table, and chairs sanitized?" Ask, "Do you use a bleach-based disinfectant?" If the shop isn’t clean, or your questions are not well receive, or you are uncomfortable, then leave.

Bloodborne pathogens are dangerous, and can contaminate all different types of surfaces. A good shop owner will appreciate a client who has done their homework and is prepared to take responsibility for their health by asking questions.

The technician needs to be able to see what they are doing during your procedure. You might plan to take a nap during your procedure but you want your tech very alert, aware, and wide awake.

Can you see a sink, and facilities in the online images of the studio? Close water facilities are necessary for frequent hand washing which is essential for cleanliness. Hands should be washed with a sanitizing soap, from a soap dispenser, and then dried using good quality disposable paper towels.

Hand sanitizer should not be used as a substitute for good hand washing. Your artist must clean their hands before wearing the gloves. Make sure your practitioner wears new disposable gloves to minimize your risk of contamination. Check for online photos of your technician doing a procedure.
